All following octane ratings will be U.S. standard (R+M/2).
When I first got my ST, it didn't like 89 octane. I ran 91+ for about
10,000 miles (1 year-ish of riding). On a whim I went back to 89 and it
seemed to perform a little better, but it doesn't feel as responsive, though
it may be the placebo effect. I haven't noticed any pinging thus far.
I had to run 87 for about 2 miles (yes, I ran dry; middle of Alabama and no
sign of civilization) and it didn't like it at all. Pinging and knocking
and snarling and gnashing of teeth.
Summary, I like the feel of the engine when it's running 91+, but 89 works
fine for commutes. If I'm out for banging gears and having fun, 91+ is the
order of the day.

Steve,
I could not detect any difference in how the bike runs between 89 and
91 Octane (in the USA). I tried 87 but in hot weather it would
occasionally ping. So I run 89.
