Probably only adding to what has already been said, but as I've got two  
bikes and only one "optimate" charger I sometimes have to jump from another  
battery. I've done this from the car on more than one occassion and no problem.  
The engine running or not running is a recent argument, I keep the ignition off  
( just in case ! ). 
 
Optimates are excellent, but one for each bike helps!!!
