Hmm... not sure i'm following you here. Suppose it _is_
dead. Why wouldn't shorting the solenoid terminals make the
engine start ?
I suppose having a look at the elctrical diagram might help
me understand, but right now i can't cos i'm at work. Are
you saying that the start button plays a role other than
simply operate the solenoid to close the power circuit to
the starter engine ?
I forgot to add, dunno if that's relevant, that the engine
starts _without_ the start button being depressed. Just turn
the key, put the piece of wire on and that's it.
