Thank you all!
The bike is up and running with the engine warning
light on. I expect it to go away after 3 times heat up
and cool down. I also used the opportunity to go over
en clean all the electric contacts under the fuel
tank.
It is good to have a running St and a happy wife (or
is it the opposite?.)!!

Also, when this happened on my 04 after sitting for a
week +/- the check engine light came on. After three
heat up / cool down cycles the light went off.
I believe that I read on this list's archives that's
normal behavior.

The problem was lack of fuel somewhere in the system
indicated by a very different sound when the motor is
turning over with your thumb on the starter. Almost
like a high pitch whine.

To get the fuel to flow again I turned on the ignition
and quickly turned the throttle to fully open then let
it close again. I hit the starter and the sound
changed momentarily, I'm guessing indicating that the
fuel system was "priming". A little more throttle
while turning the motor over and she eventually fired.
It ran rough for a while but eventually came good and
got better after a couple of heat cycles.
