Agreed - the difference between 5th and 6th is so nominal that I too find myself not so much looking for another gear, but trying to upshift to make sure that I'm in 6th. I have found myself in 5th for long stretches, and have found myself trying to upshift from 6th - both due to the fact that it is so hard to tell which gear you are in. If not a bigger difference between the gears, than a gear indicator would alleviate this at least (does the '05/'06 have a gear indicator?). I also agree that leaving 6th right where it is and lowering the other 5 would make for an ideal transmission. I find 6th gear to be perfect for highspeed blasts with the stock sprockets, but would prefer the grunt of lower gearing through the rest.

Eric, Brett,
I've got an 01 ST that I keep trying for 7th gear as well,
seems like very little difference between 5th and 6th and
I find myself constantly trying to go up another gear or
just checking to be sure I am already in 6th. No warp
speed involved - just 60-75 mph highway crusing/commuting.
I would like a bit lower gearing in first and a little
higher in 6th, but no way to get that with a sprocket
change- so I ride it stock. Riding two lanes and
backroads, this gearing issue is not a problem, so
depending on how you use the bike, it may be a bigger
factor for some.
