My two cents...
You can be smooth but still be aggressive and chew up a rear tyre in as little as 1000kms. I still get good mileage from Bridgstone 020's. I commute daily, tour, weekend blast etc. I tend to think that if my bike was a weekend toy only I would get less tyre and fuel mileage.

I too try to "ride a smooth pace through the twisties". (I have not meet any
riders that do not say they try to be smooth.) While I believe that improves the
tire mileage, its no cure. Also the "... or to the point of requiring a lot of
brakes to set up for the next turn", is what eats up the front tires almost as
fast as the rears.
I have not tried slowing down to improve tire mileage. I just don't see the
point.
