Subject: High Side
A while ago there was a post from someone on the list who woke up =
wondering what happened and everyone assertained a high side.
I can now speak from experience that a high side is not necessarily =
avoidable. On Saturday May 1 I high sided going somewhere between 65-73 =
MPH. I was gently passing someone on the outside in Turn 8 at Jennings =
when WHAM! The bike suddenly wiggled and snap! over I went. I guess, =
luckily, I landed on my rear-end sliding. Then rolled onto my left side =
whilst finishing my slide. I ended up with a 10% compression fracture =
on my T8 vertebra and a possible fractured tail bone. Worst of all =
there's also a hematoma at the base of the spine (I guess the tail bone) =
that bears watching to be sure it gets reabsorbed without incident.
Two weeks and 300 emails later, I finally got to access my work email =
from home. Unfortunately, I couldn't unsubscribe from the list from =
home so my email got flooded.
Wouldn't it figure, of all the padding and protective gear I was wearing =
I had to land on the one place where there is no padding :(
Had a had more advance warning I would have forced a low-side rather =
than go over the top. To my knowledge/memory I never felt it until it =
was too late, it came on that fast.
Now that I can access my email, I'm not sure if I'm going to unsubscribe =
for a while or not. The list will probably give me something to do =
while I recover.
Moral of the story is - A high side can happen faster than you can blink =
your eye. Always wear as much protective gear as you can and hope it =
happens in a track setting. This could have easily happened on the =
street where I would have been less protected and had to wait longer for =
medical attention.
Accidents are something we all face, but motorcycling is a passion that =
possesses all of us and we accept the risk. The risk is worth the =
pleasure :)
