Keith,
I did a 5700 mile tour last year with a 17/43 combo. It really doesn't seem
to affect the mileage or the tourability of the ST. It will raise your
engine speed about 600RPM for any given gear and speed from a 19/43 to a
17/43. My '99 came with a 18/43 setup stock and I ran that for about 20,000
miles. I ran the 17/43 for another 20,000 miles and I'm trying out the
19/43 now. For my style of riding, I think Triumph had it right in the
first place and the next new chain on my bike will see the 18/43 combo
again.
A 17 tooth front from a 19 will really 'wake' the bike up. You will
definitely feel the difference, especially from a stop.

this? How is long distance touring affected by the 17/19
difference? Should I send the 17 back and get an 18, or try
out the 17? 17 is a big drop from 19, percentage-wise, so
I'm unsure what to do at this point.
