If you don't mind getting some weird looks, try an Aerostich with the
pockets filled with ice. That is, all the external pockets - one chest (see
below), two thigh pockets and the big back pouch.
One of those large bags of ice (99 cents locally) will fill all the pockets
including a pound or two in the back pouch between the shoulders. Add a
Platypus drinking bladder which is a perfect fit in the left chest zipper
pocket. Get the wide-mouth version so you can fill it with a mix of ice
and your preferred beverage (preferably Gatorade rather than gin & tonic)
and you are good to go.
This set-up worked fine for an 800+ mile day from Asheville to southern
Louisiana - but trust me, you WILL get the weird looks!
Oh yes - the people who've been recommending doing stretches are absolutely
right.
