sprint RS hugger installation
i spent yesterday afternoon enjoying the sun (and cold :-) in my
driveway, installing the rear hugger.
installation went fine, as per the provided instructions, with the
following nits, just in case anyone else is about to do their own:
- the parts list isn't complete -- there's one necessary
shouldered bolt that isn't in the parts list, but which was in
the kit. there's also another bolt, nut, rivnut, and
L-bracket combo, that are needed if the right-side swingarm
on your bike wasn't factory-fitted with a threaded fitting
(the "rivnut"). it's a nut that press-fits into an existing
hole. mine already had the fitting.
- during disassembly, they never listed a step for "remove the
original chainguard". this becomes obvious fairly shortly.

- they don't really supply enough little self-adhesive pads to
fully protect the swingarm from the curved metal mounting
bracket. i glued some extra bits of rubber in place. at the
very least, you shouldn't stick the two central pads on until
you see where the contact points are between the bracket and
the swingarm. you can use some tweezers or needle-nose pliers
to put them in after the bracket is in place.
- the instructions mention a big rubber washer that fits between
the hugger and the swingarm on the right side (at the point
where the abovementioned shouldered bolt and rivnut hold it
on). that washer isn't in the list, and wasn't in my kit. i
made one from a piece of rubbe sheet that i had around the
workshop.
- on the left side, the small rubber washers that go around the cap
screws, which insert from the bottom, need to fit into a cup
molded into the hugger. the washers were way to big in diameter,
so i had to trim them to the same diameter as the screw-head for
them to fit.
- they mention straightening the hugger before you tighten everything
down, and i tried to do that, but visually centering something like
that with no real reference points is hard. sure enough, when
i got the wheel back on, it's now obvious that the whole thing is
off to the right a bit. i'll try and move it over a bit next
time the wheel comes off.
- like andrea, i left off the trim piece that holds the triumph
logo. i think it looks better without it. screws are _not_
ugly. screws are beautiful. :-)
