I've been very happy with the set of reusable earplugs I got from Riders
Wearhouse. <http://www.aerostitch.com/> They're made by Etymotic, who
primarily make high-end hearing aids and in-ear headphones. They look
like a three-tiered Christmas tree, complete with a hard plastic "trunk"
coming out the bottom. The ear plug material is made of very flexible
rubber, so they're very comfortable. They also seem to seal very well --
at least in my ears. ($15)
They provide only a 12 dB drop in sound, but it seems plenty sufficient
for my daily commute. Maybe if I was doing a SaddleSore I'd go for
something that blocks more noise.
Also, if folks are interested, Riders Wearhouse have a couple of sampler
packs of earplugs. Each pack has twelve different pairs of earplugs; one
pack has disposables ($10), while the other has reusables ($25). I
figure if you can't find something you're happy with out of these, then
you're probably a Martian with big, funky ears! :-)
OK, enough from me for a while -- I leave tomorrow for eight days of
swimming with the sharks around Grand Cayman. Let's hope they don't
acquire a taste for dawg meat...
