The same thing happened to mine when I brought it home originally. If you
have access to an air compressor, remove the bar end and shoot a little air
up under the grip. With a little practice, you can "inflate" the grip and
slide it around quite easily.

Ah ha. That must be it then. It was trailered twice since I saw it
last, both times by someone who may well have used a similar system.
