I guess that everything depends on what you need and what you
already have. I know a few people who've started racing in the last
year or two and nearly all of them have ended up buying a van, including
some who started out by buying a trailer.
This is because a van offers more weather protection and security,
is handier for carrying tools and spares, and is a lot more comfortable
to sleep inside ;-)
If you're just transporting a bike a trailer may be a better bet as
it will be easier to load the bike onto, but several of the people I
know who use them have had the trailer flip at some point :-(
