Why not run premium?  What if it isn't the gas that causes the ping at all?
You can actually lose power by going to higher octane because the higher
octane just means it burns slower AND can mean you actually build deposits
in your combustion chamber because you are NOT getting complete combustion.
With octane the higher the rating does not mean the better the gas.  I
believe that if you are getting ping at 89 (ron+mon/2) it is more probable
that something other than gas is at fault.  Last but not least all gas isn't
equal because some stations have some pretty bad gas and whoever advised to
shop around is makes an excellent point.

Why not just run premium and be done with it?  What's it cost, an 
extra $.10 a gallon  or less than a dollar a tank full??  if it pings 
the octane is too low.
