>>> Donny, if you forgot your helmet, how long do you think it would take before you noticed something is missing? <<<
This is embarrassing,... but you asked an honest question. About once a week I start out without my helmet. Sometimes I notice as soon as I leave the driveway and sometimes I get a few blocks down the road. Occasionally (rarely) I'll get half-way across town before somebody yells "Where's your helmet!". This in spite of the fact that I no longer tuck it away in the cabinet but leave it out in plain sight next to the bikes;... I guess it'll never be a confirmed habit. I rode about 15 years before I ever saw anybody with a helmet on the street and another 30 when I wore one only when I was going to be on a freeway (because the air is always so full of dirt) or it looked like rain. Of course for the last decade+, our oppressive state government has made it compulsory here in Kalifornia, so I've had no choice. However there is hope, a guy in Santa Cruz has been fighting this for years and it's now unenforceable in Santa Cruz County and may soon be declared unenforceab
le state
-wide. They can still write a ticket (although they don't) but it's automatically dismissed by the court. It all turns on the 'approved helmet' designation, of which there is none. Since the state doesn't have a list no one can say what is and what isn't legal.
Ride fast and free;
