Re: [ST] What's Wrong?

1200cc harleys get something like 80 hp at the crank.

As the saying goes, it's not the size the matters, it's what you do with it!! LOL!!

Many things go into this in reality. First, peak hp is really just a multiple of the torque and rpm. So with other things being equal, a higher revving engine will have a higher peak hp. That doesn't mean that it has more hp at every other rpm - just that it gets higher. Additionally, you can change timing, cam lobes, and other features of the engine to make the hp come on differently. For example, the R6 doesn't get good power until after 8500 rpm, and is an F'in banshee after 11k. While desireable for the track, this sucks donkey for the road. So change the engine configuration and get more useable power downlow, and give up the high rpm hp (shift the torque curve). This is some of what goes on. Look at the Daytona and Sprints that both had the 955 engine. Same engine really but one had 147hp and the other 118 at the crank.

And then there is getting past the engine inefficiencies, which is what also happens with the big cruiser engines. Many variable to change the characteristics of the engines power output. That's why different strokes for different folks.

There's so much that goes into this, but it's not as simple as teh 675 puts out x hp, and the 955 should put out more.

Ok, what's wrong with this picture? My 2000 RS (955cc) supposedly has 108 HP at the crank and the Daytona 675 cc triple supposedly has 125 HP at the crank. What's up with that?

How do I get more HP out of my larger triple? It should be good for at least 145 HP at the crank.
