I had the same problem a year ago... I put some fuel injector cleaner in
the tank and the problem was solved.
I suspect that the fuel level sensor gets gummed up and the fuel injector
cleaner cleans it off.
(I work as a mechanic in an GM dealership and we had the same problem with
some cars and the solution was to use fuel injection cleaner)
