The last 2 bikes I've had have had 6-speeds and I get lost and
frequently try for 7th. However, the shift from 5th to 6th drops the
rpm 6.9% and your gear change raised it 10.8%, so you may well be
thinking there's another gear left.
The chain is just a tad too long. I have 2500 miles on my '02 and was
on the last index spot of chain adjustment with the factory sprockets.
That's one reason I bought a bigger rear sprocket. You could buy a
chain tool and take out 2 links, or add a larger rear sprocket.
