Over time and a couple of bangs, the mounting brackets bend and shift the
plastic closer to the pipe. Net result is a melt down. Permanent fix for me
was to remove the inner factory heat shield material and replace with a
product called ZeroClearance by Lydall Inc. www.coolandquiet.com.
Not cheap for a 42" x 48" sheet; but solved the problem for the last 16K
miles.
