If anything the motor is shorter, or further forward.  When I traded in my 
'99 for the '02 Sprint ST, I kept the 1 piece shifter(a Daytona shifter, 
eliminates the linkage) I was using.  When I tried to use it on the '02 I 
found it didn't shorten the reach from peg to lever as much as it did on the 
'02.  I don't know what you mean about the rear valve stem, they've always 
been straight.(?)  Other than that I agree completly with your observations.
