There's no doubt that I tend to shift softly, which, according to consensus
seems to be my problem.
The other thing I'm curious about is shifting noise and what it means. The
ST makes a loud clunk when I shift from 1st to 2nd, 2nd to 1st, and
sometimes 2nd to 3rd. My old Yamaha royal star, and a Buell I rode once
also made a loud clunk like this. I've ridden a VFR, an FZ1 and a couple of
other jap bikes that just made quiet little snickity snick snicks when
shifted. Whatsupwitdat? Will different oil help?Val

I get this too and agree it's not very comforting. I've had it happen
shifting from 5->6 or 6->5. I've found that if I really shift firmly,
as others have recommended, it doesn't happen.
