Logic says it will be temporary. We just don't know how temporary. Thinking
back, I can't remember when my brakes got "mushy". I just know that once we
were talking about it I noticed that, hey they ARE a bit mushy!
Your mechanic is probably right...there isn't anything wrong with your
brakes. Just like there's nothing wrong with your tires when you find your a
pound low on pressure. Air leaks and brake piston seals stick (or air gets
in, depending on which theory you buy into).
I think it'll turn out to be a medium term maintenance item. Perhaps every
oil change or twice per oil change interval. It only takes 15-20 minutes
total(I'd reccommend NOT drinking beer while messing with you brakes!), so
is very easy and quick way to restore a hard feel to the brakes.
