Actually going up a couple of teeth on the back would move the wheel a
bit further ahead compared to a 18/43, keep it roughly the same as a
19/43 (as on the ST), but going 17/45 would be roughly equilivent to a
16.3/43. Going up in the back is equivelent to going doing in the front
by about a 43/17:1 or 43/18:1 ratio depending on how you look at it.

Grab an 18 speed mountain bike and play with the front and rear
derailers to see the effect of going larger and smaller on the front and
rear.
