[ST] stress marks

Hello Neil & Everyone:
The stress marks on the left front slider are nothing to be concerned about. The marks are in the clearcoat, not the underlying metal. There is virtually nothing that can be done about this except paint the sliders so you won't see the crackling.
Basically, paint contracts as it dries. It continues to do so after the curing period in the paint shop and while it is exposed to sun and the elements. The slider is painted before the front forks are assembled. This means there is no "stress" in the metal surrounding the pinch bolt. During assembly the axle, wheel, pinch bolt is installed and torqued to specification. This creates stresses in the surrounding metal of the slider. Loosening/tightening the pinch bolts to install different springs/gold valve emulators, changing tyres, etc. just continues to add/remove stresses to the area. The clearcoat isn't flexible as when fresh, so it begins to crackle or "craze". This is natural and to be expected. As long as the crackling is in the Clearcoat and not the metal, there is nothing to be concerned about. It is purely an aesthetic issue.
Best wishes for a safe and happy Thanksgiving.
Thanks for an excellent forum on a great bike!
