[ST] Warranties, Parts & Customer Service

I've not been following the digest very closely, but this is in response to the chain concerns of Mike Bostock. Understand, the laws regarding warranties in the UK may be different than they are here.

Here's the deal: In general, a warranty CANNOT be voided by the use of non-manufacturer parts. For example, Triumph USA cannot refuse to honor a warranty if you used Redline synthetic instead of Triumph Mobil 1, AS LONG AS THE component is of the same spec as the original. If a manufacturer REQUIRES that their part be put in in order for the warranty to be honored, then the manufacturer must provide the part without cost to the customer. The Magnusson-Moss Warranty Act, Section 102(c) covers this issue. An overview can be found at http://www.ftc.gov/bcp/conline/pubs/buspubs/warranty/undermag.htm

Mike's problem may be that the dealership installed a chain that did not meet Triumph's specs. If so, then Triumph must first establish HOW the chain does not meet specs. If the chain was non-spec, unless Triumph was directly involved in the deal, they have no liability. The DEALER however would, and Triumph should back Mike.

On a related note, I think that getting all worked up over the poor customer service in a single contact is excessive. I would suggest that Mike simply call Triumph UK again, and if he gets the same thoroughly uncharming lady, speak to her supervisor.

Grace and Peace,
