[ST] mounting luggage rack

Hey guys,
Anyone out there mount your own luggage rack? If so, what exactly is the
trick to getting the rear reinforcing bracket into where it belongs so
that the mudguard can be lifted back into place? It seems as though the
bracket isn't quite shaped exactly right in that both ends won't fit flush
up against the subframe at the same time...you get one, the other drops.
Is this thing really necessary?
