Eric,
I live in Verona, NJ. West Orange is one of the neighboring towns. We
moved to the area from Hartford, CT 3 years ago. We picked Verona for
the schools (3 boys) and its proximity to NYC (20 miles, it's where I
get 99.9% of my work). Good town to raise a family. Montclair (borders
on Verona and WO) is a great mini-city with numerous great bars,
restaurants and shops. I posted something on commuting to NYC during the
mileage thread.
Verona: A 3br house goes for about $230-400k (depending on the
neighborhood). Taxes on those houses, approx. 5-7k. The greater NYC area
is all pretty much the same. Verona is actually on the low end. We
bought our house for 165k in '98. We could get over 250k for for it now.
There are also condos in town with views of NYC. Dunno about costs for
those. As for riding, there are a few very short, fun blasts within 5
miles. Otherwise, about 45 minutes to get to the better areas.
Warwick: Rural. Beautiful area. Don't know much about housing though.
Lots of hills! And cows! Riding: about 45 minutes from Verona (see above).
Stroudsburg: I don't know a thing about it other than the fact that:
1) I pass through there on the way to Pocono Raceway
2) Conveniently located near the Delaware Water Gap
(lots of great riding, camping, hiking in that area)
Weather: It's the northeast. What else can I say. I do manage to get out
for a ride at least one day every month (no electric vest or heated
grips!) The freeze-thaw cycle does create pot holes. But autumn colors
make up for it. Raging brush fires normally don't happen up here. Summer
can get very humid.
If you want more info I can dig deeper.

If you are in the area, give me a shout. I would be honored to meet you
and show you around.
