Oops! Front sprocket for RS, single-piece shifter

Sprocket Specialists shipped the wrong 46 tooth rear sprocket so I was
compelled to install an 18 tooth front (drive) sprocket instead. To my
surprise, there was ample outward adjustment room on the RS swingarm to
absorb the slack from the smaller diameter sprocket plus room for future
adjustment.
The verdict? Noticeable but subtle difference. Think a combination of 18
tooth front plus a 44 or 45 rear would do it for the RS (for my tastes).
Each tooth less on the front sprocket represents a difference of approx.
5.25%. One tooth 5.25%, two teeth 10.50%.
Each additional tooth on the rear sprocket represents a difference of approx.
2.3%. One tooth 2.3%, two teeth, 4.65%, three teeth 6.98%, four teeth (big
mother sprocket), 9.3%.
18 tooth front (5.25%) plus 45 tooth rear (4.65%) = approx. 9.9% (similar to
two less teeth on front). However, there's definitely not enough take-up
room on the RS swingarm to accommodate the slack from the much-smaller 17
tooth front sprocket (OK for your STers with your fancy swingarms).
Also initial test of the new Daytona single-piece shifter on the RS. What a
difference in the shifting! It's great except that it shows up the
deficiencies in the tranny (hard upshifts, difficult to find neutral).
However, bike only has 1,800 miles on it so maybe I should wait a few thous.
more before rendering judgment about the tranny. But the shifter is precison
itself, click, click, click. The arm of the shifter reaches further back
than where the shifter peg is on the regular one so I wondered if my foot
would be cramped. Tried it with my boots on and it seems OK, but that's only
for a short ride. Will try it further and then report.
Would enjoy getting together with other Sprint-ers at Biketoberfest in a
little over two weeks. Anyone want to play daddy about setting up a meeting
point or whatever?
Best,
