Re: Subject: Triumph Screens

You have to remember that the UK is an oil-producing nation, which makes the
whole price war even more outrageous.
We have the cheapest petrol BEFORE tax and the most expensive petrol AFTER
tax.
OK, we also have a fairly low rate of income tax, and Blair's argument is
partly that if tax on petrol goes down, tax on income may have to go up in
order to maintain the same standards of NHS treatment, environmental
protection and so on.
However, at least that would put everyone in the same boat (as it were).
You might say that the tax on petrol is a user charge, in that people who
don't own a petrol-driven vehicle don't have to pay it - but the public
transport here is still so unreliable and in many cases non-existent (in
rural areas) that owning a car or bike is often a necessity - albeit not so
much as in the US, perhaps.
I think it's just part of a wave now, as there are currently mass protests
and actions in Belgium (spurred on by France) and Germany, though Ireland
and Spain have also threatened to get involved, and I'm sure it's only the
beginning.
