in massachusetts, there are two appearances -- one with a magistrate,
at which the officer needn't appear, and then a real court appearance,
at which they must appear.  you can often bargain down at the former, if
that's your goal, but without a lawyer and/or a really good case, your
only chance at the latter is if the officer doesn't show.  therefore it's
good to try and reschedule your date, since they'll usually schedule all
of a specific officer's cases on one day, and he may not show up if you're
the only one of "his" on the new day you choose.  (if you can somehow
manage to pick his/her day off, all the better.)
