Joel,
The pads can wear out a lot quicker than you might think, probably =
should not rule that out without checking. They are pretty easy to =
replace, you do not have to remove the rear wheel, the hardest part is =
getting to the bolts that hold things on. Removing the chain guard helps =
a bit. I would recommend you have a service manual if you are going to =
do this yourself.
Why are you wanting to wait till spring to go for a ride with us! Who =
are you using for a dealer?
Paul & Dee
I just finished riding my ST from Northern Virgina to it's new home in =
State College, PA, when I noticed very early in the trip that the rear =
brake pedal would 'pulse' at very low speeds, much akin to the feedback =
provided by an anti-lock brake system. I stopped using the brake for =
the remainder of the 3 hour ride, only to discover that by the end of =
the trip, the brake (if used lightly) would grind, not unlike the sound =
of worn brake pads. Nothing unusual, except for the fact that I only =
have 4,000 miles.=20
On the chain side of the rear disc, the disc is discolored with black =
streaks, most likely from the chain lube. To the touch, one can feel =
the grooves now worn on the right side of the disc. The left side is =
fine, as far as I can tell. Using a mirror to try to check the pads =
didn't work as well as I would have hoped, but the lighting wasn't very =
good. Up on the center stand, the brakes grind when the wheel is =
rotated, and the wheel does not turn as easy as it should.
What I'm wondering is if my rear caliper(s) may have seized, causing =
constant friction on one side of the disc. How difficult is it to =
replace the rear pads? Do I have to remove the rear wheel? How much =
does a new rotor cost? Should I take it to the shop, now over an hour =
drive away? Could this fall under a warranty repair?
Any thoughts would be appreciated. Also, if anyone is in Central PA, =
please feel free to contact me for some riding next spring. My friend =
who is in that area owns a 99 Tiger.=20
Thanks
