Mileage vs. time

Most articles seem to recommend changing oil at 3000 miles or 3 months
which ever occurs first.

I rarely put on 3000 miles in less than three months.  My question is do
you all change your oil four times a year even if you don't put on 12k? 
Is it necessary to change the oil based on time (as holds true for fuel)
or is this a marketing angle?
