My 99 ST had the same probem. When taking off with a cold engine I could not
change into second gear and always the engine revved up with everybody
looking and wondering what was happening. (Hey that guy can't drive a
motorcycle).
After the first oil change it got better.
I now have 7000 kms and now my ST shifts very smoothly.
Sometimes when very cold it goes a bit stiffer, but only the first kms.
