RE: Another leak has developed

Steve,

I too am a member of the leaky top box club.

The source of the water on mine appears to be the lower bolt on each lower
hinge, though this could be the result of drip-down from the perimeter
sealing bead channel.

My dealer claimed to have encountered a few leaks on these boxes, and
attributed it to the position of the join in the sealing bead, suggesting
this should be at the back (near the handle) instead of at the front.

It's also possible that the sealing bead doesn't fill its channel -
particularly where the channel dog-legs around the hinges.

As you say, another possibility is the outer hinge boots.

The lid retaining cords also contribute to making the box leaky, in that as
standard they cross the sealing bead.

Recommendations
- ---------------
1) Fill the hinge boots with SILICONE (not bituminous as I did!) mastic.
2) Fill the hinge-side bead channel with silicone mastic (before refitting
the bead with split towards the handle)
3) Re-route the lid retaining cords to stay inside the bead.

If all else fails, get a Givi Maxia. My old one was water-tight enough to
use as a Kursk escape vessel!
