Spring on the clutch rod

Hello,
  As I was changing my oil last night I noticed that the sprint on the rod
the clutch cable attaches to is not connected to anything.  The spring clips
to the rod via a little stem, but the other end of the spring is not
attached to anything!!  Does anyone else have this?  Why?  Not a great
description but its early...
